Men's Prayer

Thursday Mornings at 6:30 AM

Men gathering early to seek God together. Start your day anchored in prayer and fellowship with other men of faith.

Types of Prayer

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people."

1 Timothy 2:1 NIV

Paul identifies four distinct types of prayer that should characterize our prayer life. Each serves a different purpose and together they form a complete picture of how we communicate with God.

Supplications (Petitions)

deésis

Urgent requests born out of a deep sense of need. These are the prayers we pray when we recognize our dependence on God — for provision, protection, healing, and help in times of trouble.

Prayers

proseuché

The general word for prayer — drawing near to God in worship, adoration, and communion. This is the broad, ongoing conversation with our Father that shapes every part of our lives.

Intercessions

enteuxis

Praying on behalf of others. An intercessor stands in the gap, bringing the needs of others before God with boldness and confidence — praying for leaders, the lost, the sick, and the hurting.

Thanksgivings

eucharistia

Prayers of gratitude and praise. Thanksgiving shifts our focus from our circumstances to God's faithfulness. It is both a sacrifice and a weapon — reminding us of who God is and what He has done.

The Power of Prayer

God's Word is full of promises about the power and importance of prayer.

"The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

James 5:16

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:6-7

"Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."

Matthew 18:19-20

"Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

Jeremiah 33:3

"Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

Mark 11:24

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

Romans 8:26

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."

1 John 5:14

"The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

Psalm 145:18

How to Pray

If you're new to prayer or want to go deeper, the ACTS model is a simple framework that helps you pray with purpose and balance.

A

Adoration

Start by praising God for who He is — His character, His attributes, His faithfulness. Adoration shifts your focus from yourself to the greatness of God.

"Father, You are holy, powerful, and full of mercy. I praise You for Your unfailing love."

C

Confession

Honestly bring your sins and shortcomings before God. Confession clears the way for deeper intimacy and restores your relationship with Him.

"Lord, I confess that I've been anxious instead of trusting You. Forgive me and help me surrender."

T

Thanksgiving

Thank God for specific blessings — answered prayers, provision, relationships, grace. Gratitude cultivates a heart of faith.

"Thank You for my family, for Your provision this week, and for the way You answered my prayer."

S

Supplication

Bring your needs and the needs of others before God. Be specific. He invites you to ask boldly and trust that He hears every word.

"I pray for healing for my friend, wisdom in my decision at work, and revival in our church."

Praying in the Spirit

Praying in the Spirit is a powerful dimension of prayer that goes beyond our natural understanding. It is the Holy Spirit praying through us — expressing what our minds cannot articulate.

When we pray in the Spirit, we partner with God in a supernatural way. The Spirit knows the perfect will of the Father and intercedes accordingly. This kind of prayer builds our faith, strengthens our inner man, and aligns us with God's purposes.

If you're curious about praying in the Spirit or want to grow in this area, we encourage you to ask God for this gift. He loves to give good gifts to His children. Come talk to a pastor or prayer team member — we'd love to walk with you.

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people."

Ephesians 6:18

"But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God's love."

Jude 1:20-21

"For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding."

1 Corinthians 14:14-15

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

Romans 8:26

Baptism

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward decision. It's a public declaration that you have placed your faith in Jesus and are choosing to follow Him.

At Oaks Church, we believe baptism is an important step of obedience for every believer. If you've accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, baptism is your next step. It doesn't save you — but it identifies you with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Matthew 28:19

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to every believer for the common good. These gifts are not earned — they are given by grace to build up the church and advance the Kingdom of God.

"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good."

1 Corinthians 12:7

Word of Wisdom

Supernatural insight for applying God's truth to specific situations.

Word of Knowledge

Miracles

Supernatural acts of power that go beyond natural explanation.

Speaking a God-inspired message for edification, encouragement, and comfort.

The ability to distinguish between the Spirit of God, human spirit, and evil spirits.
